Rail Transit Innovation

P&S - PASSENGER VEHICLES

Proprietary Intellectual Rights

The BYD SkyRail was developed by an R&D team of over 1,000 engineers working over a five-year period with an investment of RMB 5 billion. Such an undertaking has made BYD one among very few companies worldwide to own 100 percent of the proprietary intellectual property rights to a complete monorail system.

Unattended Train Operation

The SkyRail Unattended Train Operation (UTO) system offers a wide variety of convenient services, including fully automatic operation, safe interval tracking, self-diagnosis, automatic wake-up, automatic passenger detection, and facial recognition. In case of a power outage, the SkyRail moves on to the next station powered by its on-board batteries.

Signaling System

The SkyRail’s SIL 4-certified train control system is BYD’s intellectual property.

Bogie

The SkyRail bogie follows a single-rail design, which enables the train to negotiate sharp curves with a smaller turning radius and results in less tire wear and lower energy consumption. With closely fitted bogies, streamlined vehicle body design and an adjustable secondary suspension system, SkyRail provides passengers with a more spacious and less bumpy ride experience than typical rail transit.

Energy Storage System

SkyRail has a regenerative braking system, which can convert kinetic energy into electrical energy that it stores in its batteries whenever the train brakes. The train’s back-up batteries can be deployed in emergencies to power the train for more than 3 km to reach the next station, ensuring passenger safety.
